Job Description:

The Opportunity

Ever worked on a team where the requirements were dictated to you by stakeholders? Not at Pluralsight. We believe in Human-Centered Design, autonomous teams, and the customer breaking the tie. Which means our cross-functional teams share the same focus: learning from our internal and external customers and using that knowledge to decide what problems to solve and how to solve them. This is why we look for practitioners who are experienced, good at understanding people, and are driven by the love of what they do.

This is where you come in. We are looking for a Principal Product Designer who cares deeply about their craft, is highly skilled at applying expertise in Human-Centered Design to ensure optimal user experiences, and is passionate and committed to partnering with the Head of Skills Management to achieve crucial outcomes that will propel the vision of democratizing technology skills forward for the world.

Our Skills organization is structured around jobs to be done (i.e. customer needs) to ensure we operate in the most effective way to deliver customer value (solutions not just features or courses), with clear accountability for end to end customer outcomes. This also enables collaboration within and across departments and fosters the growth and development of our team members.

You will report directly to the Head of Skills Management and will be the most senior designer on the team. You and other senior designers of adjacent product teams will have regular skip-level connections with the EVP of Skills and will have the opportunity to provide input that shapes and defines our product strategy across our entire suite of Skills products.

Your relationship and partnership with your Head of Skills Management will be key to gaining a deep understanding of the Objectives and Key results of the organization. You'll have opportunities to provide mentoring to more junior designers within the team and leverage your deep discipline knowledge to deliver key business results and help others grow and develop.

Who you are:

  • You care deeply about your discipline, practicing with excellence, moving your craft forward, and creating in the most effective way possible

  • You have a vision to support and empower individuals and teams to do their best work across an organization

  • You care about the next generation of practitioners and helping them grow so they can build products that will change the world.

  • Your diplomatic leadership style lends itself to working closely with other leaders to co-create outcomes with real results

  • You take accountability for efficiently scaling, working to define and support efforts that have the greatest impact.

What you'll own:

Partner with Head of Skills Management to develop a deep knowledge of the organization's goals and help them create a supporting design strategy. They will support and enable a Human-Centered Design culture throughout the organization.

  • Cross-cutting Design strategy needs and initiatives

    • Operating at the highest level of the Product Design discipline to empower Design strategy across teams and initiatives

    • Defining the look and feel of our digital products and ensuring high strategic and visionary standards.

    • Expert advocacy for accessibility and sweeping implementation of accessible designs.

    • Anticipating new platforms, mediums, and ways of designing for the future of technology.

    • Evangelizing Human-Centered Design culture and process.

    • Advising and conducting research with teams and synthesis methods and applying research to generate theories that inform/drive strategy.

    • Exceptional communication skills that can create buy-in for user-centered product strategy, as well as an ability to speak on a technical level and communicate clearly with engineers and other stakeholders within your team and beyond

    • Inspiring and teaching others to adopt new Product/UX practices and tools through my example and practice.

    • Expert input into the hiring of Product Design roles

  • Supporting teams and work

    • The opportunity to provide guidance and input on Product Design best practices to accomplish goals of teams and group OKRs

    • Coaching and working alongside teams aligned with strategic initiatives

    • Facilitating cross-team collaboration

    • Inspire Product Design innovations that move us forward towards our Vision.

  • Supporting other individual contributors

    • Facilitating group design feedback and discussions on UX pattern consistency and excellence

    • Can provide feedback on skill execution and engagement toward practice growth in partnership with cross-functional managers

The ultimate goal is to design at the highest level and deliver strategic outcomes; using your expert knowledge to assess opportunities, create new solutions, empower those around you, and work across teams and contexts.

Experience you'll need:

  • You understand and have practiced the breadth and depth of the skills required for your discipline, resulting in the expertise and experience of an incredibly senior individual contributor

  • You have grown in your industry and domain, constantly learning, and contributing back to the profession, helping others up behind you

  • You have demonstrated a diplomatic and collaborative leadership style, leading through seeking context and influence

  • You are a trusted expert who knows how to harness the power of data science and machine learning to achieve long-term strategic outcomes
